“The Stable Boy” is historical fiction. It is a gay love story, a Pygmalion story, a Black history story, and a rags to riches story. The book follows the amazing life of a lowly slave in the antebellum south, Willie Boy, who used his genius and acquired elegant language, to become one of the richest men in America. As unlikely as it may seem, Willie and his owner’s handsome son fall in love and form a long lasting relationship. The story takes the reader from the rural south to New Orleans, Chicago, New York and London. It exposes the pain of slavery, the hatefulness of black prejudice, and struggle of being homosexual. Willie Boy outsmarts his white adversaries, but wins their admiration as well.
